Portrait & History

Hotel Donatz

This 3-Star Superior hotel is located in the centre of Samedan, in the heart of the village, just a few minutes’ walk from the Mineralbad & Spa and in the immediate vicinity of hiking trails, cross-country skiing trails, bus stops, and Samedan Train Station.

The Donatz offers an exceptionally warm, personal atmosphere. We run our family business with passion and commitment, offering 25 spacious Swiss-pine-adorned rooms, and our Restaurant La Padella. Our hotel is also renowned for its Wine Bar, where locals and guests come together to taste René Donatz’s latest wine discoveries, a beer, or a delicious cup of coffee.

Treat yourself to a stay in the Engadine - whether for an extended holiday in the mountains or just a short break. We look forward to welcoming you to Hotel Donatz.

Your Hosts,
The Donatz Family

Family tradition since 1974

The passion and pride are palpable when René and Cornelia Donatz talk about their family business. They took over the Hotel Donatz in 2008, and, with their Wine Bar concept, created a veritable wine-lovers’ paradise.

The couple was introduced by celebrity chef Jacky Donatz - René Donatz’s uncle.

But their shared passion for good food and the hotel industry was already present: Cornelia and René had both completed culinary training. While he subsequently stirred things up on cruise ships, she worked as a seasonal employee in the Zermatt and Zurich hotel industry.

Hotel Donatz has been an important meeting place in the Engadine since 1928. This landmark traditional house was once home to many small businesses such as the local goldsmith, saddlery, and a garage, and - way before that - the public lavatory of Samedan.
